If you cannot use the online form, you can also enter from 1.00 pm until 1.45 pm on the day of the show. Please enter online wherever possible, as this reduces the admin on the day and helps the organising team prepare for the event with appropriate space for exhibits. It also reduces your hassle and gives you more time to stage your exhibits.
Judging method this year will be closed starting from 2pm with Judge Mr. Terry Ashley.
Pie & Peas will be served before and during judging (approx. 1.30 pm.) There will also be several activities including a quiz, three talks from club members and the blacked-out jar competition.
Raffle of beekeeping equipment and bee-related items during judging.
Only members of ELBKA may exhibit in the closed classes. Open classes are open to all. Guests are welcome.
Emma (Honey Show Secretary) and Anne ( incoming Show Secretary) are providing a preparation session on 7th September. See your club email for details. Otherwise, if you haven’t entered the show before, here is a rough guide…
Look through the schedule and choose some classes that you think you’d like to enter. Read the schedule carefully and prepare your exhibit as described. Pay close attention to the dimensions and / or weight specified, also if it is a pair etc. Remember if a class says 2 jars then those 2 jars must be a matching pair. The club sells individual pound jars and lids to make it easier for you to prepare your entries. We also have frame cases you can borrow to display your prize frame. You can purchase individual cut comb boxes from the club if you have an entry for that class.
For Light / Medium / Dark honey classes, make your best guess and if necessary, you can swap classes on the day – we have special coloured glass slides to compare the colour with.
Bring your entries along and check in at the desk. You will be given labels to apply to your items corresponding to your entries with a number on so you are anonymous to the judges. You place your items in the correct place on the tables (stewards will help you if required). Some plastic covers are available for the baking etc, but otherwise make sure you bring a plate etc to display your items on and cling film or a bag to cover. When you have placed your entries, you leave the hall.
Judging is closed this year (in some years our judge has given a commentary while judging which is informative, but does take a long time). There are activities happening for attendees while it is ongoing. When complete, you are welcomed back into the hall and you find out how you did by spotting certificates (or lack thereof!) on your items. Feedback is given by the judge on the overall show, and prizes awarded on the winning entries.
You then collect your entries. Your help to stack tables / chairs etc and generally clear up is very much appreciated as the organising team will have been there a long time by that point!
To get jars, cut comb containers or a frame case please come to the Offshoots apiary during an apiary session. Please make contact in advance to ensure they are available to avoid disappointment. If it is difficult for you to attend Offshoots during an apiary session we may be able to make other pick up arrangements.
